Coober Pedy

Well Dennis tries every year to ensure Tops has a memorable birthday by taking her all over Australia - last year it was Augusta WA, the previous year Broome WA and this year here at Coober Pedy. We are just lucky to be able to tag along! Tonight we are going to the Chinese restaurant for a treat and this morning we really enjoyed our coffee at the Desert Cave Hotel.

This hotel was amazing really with displays along the tunnel and you really can’t believe you are underground.

There’s a very good IGA supermarket here so we’ve restocked a bit plus we boosted our beer and wine supplies.

We selected the Toms working mine tour and it was a terrific tour which showed how they work mines today - plus we saw snippets of how it used to be done. Either way, it’s jolly hard, dirty work for little reward - although the miners never really tell you actually what they find.

It was interesting to learn that they divine for the opals just like water diviners, as the opal is formed in the old water seams. Darryl hasn’t lost his touch and the rods went beserk when he tried it out.

We have enjoyed our stay here - the people are very friendly and despite the dust and being a  junky sort of place, it does have such a lot of outback character.
Space though in the caravan parks seems to be limited and Dennis was stuck between some big rigs!!

Made his van look minuscule!! Maybe that upset him and that’s why last night he put the electric kettle on the gas to boil 😳 We did have a good laugh but the kettle in now in the bin!!

Tomorrow our journey continues - we head towards Oodnadatta to a station called Arckaringa,  which is near the Painted  Desert. We hope the road is like the William Creek one. We’re thinking of you all down south shivering away in this cold snap - but it’s not very warm here either and we’ve donned long pants for the first time.
We hope you’re all keeping warm and safe,
Love from the travellers ❌❌❌❌❌❌
