Kununurra

We left Zebra Rock Mine fairly early on Monday morning to beat the heat - then as we crossed into WA we had to put our clocks back 1.5hrs so all of a sudden we were real early!! (10am became 8.30am!) Our body clocks are still a little confused.

We are camped here at Lakeside caravan park which is quite nice but we miss our space and ability to be by ourselves. Here we have neighbours - luckily it's a quiet time as if it was busy,  there'd be people poked in everywhere.

It's been pretty hot and humid and afternoons come up thundery - but there hasn't been much rain. However, the bit of rain seems to clear the air and last night was very pleasant. We believe the humidity yesterday was 98% so we had reason to feel uncomfortable. I whinge a bit as I hate feeling hot & sweaty but there's a lovely pool here which is very much appreciated! I reckon by the time I get home I'll be even more wrinkly with all the swimming and showers!!

Yesterday at lunch time here in the park we had a visitor - this Chappy was just lying on the lake edge, oblivious to all the attention he was attracting!

You wouldn't want to step out of your van and meet him!

Yesterday we did a day trip to Wyndham - it's a funny place but the view from the 5 rivers lookout was lovely.

We detoured on the way to see the bird hide at Parry Lagoon which was good and on the way home visited 'The Grotto' which would be spectacular if the water was running. Darryl was the only one to tackle the 140 man made steps down to the gully.

Whilst Tops and I popped into Coles for supplies, Dennis and Darryl were approached by an aboriginal selling carved boab tree nuts and Dennis weakened and bought one - it's really beautiful.

Last night we entertained Chelsea McNeil and her partner Mick and it's interesting hearing stories from locals and getting information on places around. Later today Chelsea is going to take us around the property she works on and show us some of the agriculture around. We've been out to the Lake Argyle resort to see the dam wall and learn about its building. What an engineering feat! There's a lovely picnic area there which would have been a  perfect place for our picnic lunch but thismorning our milk (dated 10th May) curdled so without a cuppa, we didn't take our baskets. We visited the Durack homestead which is beautifully rebuilt and set up as a museum. The area where this house stood was flooded to make the dam.

We were interested to see this male bower bird make his bower in the gardens of this homestead.

We had a great afternoon with Chelsea and saw over the farm where they grow all sorts of crops - watermelons, pumpkins, chia seeds, maize, sorghum etc.  She then took us out to see the stage two of the Ord River scheme which will be huge when fully developed and a boost to Kununurra's economy. We are very grateful for Chelsea showing us around and now we are going to dine out together somewhere.

Tomorrow we leave Kununurra and begin the next part of our adventure along the Gibb River track. It's 660km from here to Derby at the western end with not many facilities along the way (including Internet and phone coverage) so there may be a lull in the blogs. There's no Coles or Woolworth's or bottle shops either so we have to be prepared!! Luckily there are a few fuel outlets - probably with ridiculous prices.
We wish all mothers a lovely day on Sunday - especially my lovely Mum and we'll be thinking of you all. Dennis and Darryl might spoil us! We also hope you have a great birthday Ruby and wish everyone's sports teams success this weekend.

Today I've had big Blog issues so hope I'm successful in publishing this. Love to you all and be prepared for a deluge of blogs from our Gibb River trek. xxxxxxxx
