Thargomindah

We are bunkered down here at Thargomindah until the weather improves. Gone are our shorts and tshirts and we’re back in coats and boots. Thank heavens again for my rubber boots! We’re having restrictions but it’s not due to COVID 19 - rather the weather and roads! I still think we are the lucky ones!

It’s actually a beaut little town and we are very comfortable here in the park (which isn’t brand new- just well looked after) We feel like we are bush camping as we are well away from everyone, but we have all the comforts of power, water and ammenities. We had neighbours one night but they didn’t impact on our isolation at all as they never stepped outside their vans.

The predicted rains arrived about 3pm Thursday and it rained for about 12 hrs - at one stage during the night it was quite heavy with thunder and lightning to boot - it’s all very loud when in a van! They’ve measured 42mm here with some places around receiving 60mm and as much as 90mm so it was a widespread event. It’s great to hear we had some at home as well. A big bonus for the crops. All the roads to the west and south are closed so we’ll wait till things dry out a bit before moving on.

This is the old flood truck which used to bring cars and goods across the causeway when the river flooded.

This causeway over the Bulloo River still floods, cutting the town off so newer trucks - and sometimes boats, are used to get people and supplies across. This is an unusual river as it feeds neither the Eyre basin or the Murray Darling Basin but spreads widely across plains and ends in a lake system around Tibooburra.

We are being spoilt with our morning coffees and we visit the little supermarket each day to get a few things as we are walking. There’s a lovely river and town walk which is all cement paved so we enjoy that each morning.
We are however, ready to move on and will not dally around this area as more rain is forecast at the end of the week. So we’ll head north towards hopefully warmer and drier weather. We aren’t sure where we’ll end up!
We trust you are all managing to keep warm and safe. We send our warmest wishes to Marg & Brian celebrating a special birthday and golden wedding anniversary tomorrow and wish we were there!
Till our next blog, love from the free travellers. ❌❌
