Roma

We had a full day today and ticked off several of things on our list of 'must see".  We didn't have a lot of success today with the hop on hop off bus as there was some kind of demonstration which messed up the normal bus route and we seemed to spend a lot of time sitting at bus stops and going nowhere!
However our first stop at the Colosseum was amazing and  we joined a tour to get in quickly and hear some information. It's size and grandeur is even more amazing when you know how long ago it was constructed. And to imagine the gladiators, animals, criminals all fighting to the death in the arena is sobering.

A couple of modern Roman Soldiers!!

From there we walked to the Forum and onto the Monument to Victor Emmanuel. This building is huge and very imposing with the beautiful statues and Eternal Flame and tomb of the unknown soldier.

We had a bite of lunch here then found our bus again and hopped off to see the Trevi Fountain where we threw in coins for good luck. We've read since that it's about to be renovated so that's why the bottom row near the water was blocked off. It's a huge fountain and in such a small square and it's been made  famous in the movie "Three coins in a fountain"

We found our way then to the Pantheon - this was a huge surprise as it wasnt as well known to us but it was beautiful as it's still a functioning church and was built initially in 27BC and then rebuilt between 117 - 125 AD. It has this huge dome which is the largest unsupported dome in the world!  It's circumference is exactly the same as the height. A truly innovative building 2000 years old!! We have to go back there again tomorrow if we have time.

We walked back here to relax before we went off to dinner around the corner. We are constantly surprised at the Roman roads - cars, bikes, scooters, buses  and pedestrians all compete for space and it seems to work!!  Cars often just park on the road with their hazard lights going and everyone just goes around it!

Today was quite warm and think the rest of the week is going to be the same! Tomorrow is a busy day with lots on our must see list before we leave Roma on Friday.

We send our love to you all.
