Karumba

We are now here at the fishing Mecca of the north, where we are enjoying some delicious sea food, swimming in the refreshing pool, looking around the area and catching up on some jobs. I think the average age of people in this park is 80+ so we feel quite young!! And most are here for a lot longer than the 4 nights we’re having!! Many serious long time fishing people here that’s for sure - but they are all lovely people.  We drove through Normanton and saw this purple pub - we really just drove through but on our way out, we plan to see Burke & Wills final campsite - camp 119.

We came with great expectations of serious fishing by the D’s, but since the floods, the fishing has been a bit miserly here  - plus there’s nowhere much to fish if you haven’t  got a boat - unless you aren’t afraid of crocs! So we visited the Barramundi discovery centre to see and learn about these iconic fish. This brand new centre, houses a great interpretive area and provides an opportunity to go on a tour to learn about their venture and to see and feed some big barras. I even caught one!!
We had a lovely sunset cruise last night, and even though the sunset wasn’t spectacular, the cruise was informative and it was most pleasant, enjoying a wine & beer, prawns and nibbles out on a sand island way out in the gulf!

We were alerted to the fact that the local constabulary were present at the boat ramp, so rather than take a risk of anyone losing their licence, we called into the sunset bar for more refreshments, then walked back to camp. Darryl and I picked up the car this morning on our walk.
There have been some solar and fridge issues that kept Dennis and Darryl busy for a bit - we had some overcast days which makes things a bit tricky, but full sunshine now will be great for solar generation. Tomorrow we head off east - after sampling some of the reputedly best fish ‘n’ chips ever today.  We are unsure of our destination but there’s such a lot to see on the Atherton Tablelands & Gulf Savannah.
We trust everyone is well and enjoying life as we are.
Till later, best wishes from the travellers. ❌❌❌❌
