The Savannah Way

We’ve travelled on some of this iconic road which goes from Cairns to Broome but the section from Borroloola to Hell’s Gate was new to us.

Several years ago we were advised not to travel on this section as it was so rough, but this time we’ve spoken to several people and they said it was fine. However, when we started out, the road sign said CLOSED, so we were in a dilemma,  until Darryl checked with a roadworks chap and he said we’d be ok. So off we set - the first 70 km were terrible and this section took us 2hrs!! The corrugations were terrible. After lunch, the road was much better then the final bit had graders working so we were lucky!

However, it was on this good section that Dennis punctured his tyre - and one of his new rear ones too!! Darryl and Dennis got that sorted and we finally arrived at Hells Gate roadhouse after 6pm - a very late check in for us. This was a lovely little oasis and the very accommodating chap there took the damaged tyre and fixed it ready for use the next morning. You couldn’t ask for better service.
The Savannah Way road was once again full of contrasts - we went through cyclone damaged areas - we could see where the trees were stripped and fallen. There were also fires burning somewhere so it was a little eerie driving along this section. We had several river crossings and saw many picturesque water ways and billabongs.

As we neared the Qld / NT border, we drove through a gorge and beautiful rocks and gullies much like the Kimberlys. We saw more and more stock - all looking very healthy, and started to see some kangaroos and wallabies and even some horses!

Our beer and wine supplies were getting low so we decided to pop into Burketown as it wasn’t far out of our way. However, being a Saturday most  things were closed and we could only purchase fuel from a card operated depot. The coup de gras turned out to be the pub where we decided to spoil Tops for her birthday. It was a great venue and served lovely meals - little did Tops know when we asked her that morning what she would like for lunch, that her wish of prawns would come true!!

The down side was we couldn’t purchase take away alcohol till 5pm so off we headed towards Gregory - a tiny settlement on the lovely Gregory River with really only a pub - which was very rustic - and sold beer and wine, so we were set.

Along the way to this camp spot, we passed this mob of cattle who were being mustered - the stockman said there were about 19,000 head and they looked lovely!

We ended up here at Adele’s Grove which is a campground outside of the Lawn National Park, so we are able to enjoy campfires. It’s very picturesque here and we’ve plenty to do in the National Park.
So we sign off again hoping all Mums have a lovely happy day - I’m sure Tops & I will. Till the next blog, love from the travellers.  ❌❌❌❌
